AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS TAKE FIRST AND SECOND IN REGIONAL SKILL COMPETITION

March 9, 2004

Two teams from Berks Career & Technology Center’s Automotive Technology program earned first- and second-place standings at the Eleventh Annual Greater Philadelphia Automotive Technology Competition. The team of Jason A. Rowlands, Wilson Area School District, and Joshua J. Morrow, Hamburg Area School District, seniors at BCTC’s West Campus, captured first place and the honor to compete in the national Automotive Technology Competition to be held at the New York Auto Show. Bermont Motors of Gilbertsville sponsored the team. Mr. Lewis Davis is the instructor of the West Campus program. The second-place team, sponsored by Fred Beans Ford in Boyertown, consisted of East Campus seniors Devin W. Guest, Daniel Boone Area School District, and Ty D. Kelius, Boyertown Area School District. Ronald Leinbach is the instructor of the East Campus program.

Ten school teams from Pennsylvania and New Jersey qualified for the skills competition after completing a written exam. Only the top twenty scorers out of one hundred students traveled to the event sponsored by the Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia (ADAGP). The objective of the competition is to create a challenging environment that tests students’ ability to apply the skills they have learned in a simulated work environment. During the competition, team members demonstrated hands-on skills at six work stations. Each school’s team worked to correct the vehicle faults as noted on the repair order and to perform a pre-delivery inspection on a new car. BCTC has had seven teams finish first in the history of the competition.

For their outstanding achievement, Rowlands and Morrow each received approximately $80,000 in scholarships from Lincoln Technical Institute, Ohio Diesel Technical Institute, Universal Technical Institute, Automotive Training Center, Pennco Technology in Bristol and Montgomery County Community College. Each student also received numerous prizes, including tools, clothing, and a variety of automotive accessories, as well as a trophy. At the National Automotive Technology Competition, which will be held April 12 through 15 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, Rowlands and Morrow will be one of 37 high school teams from across the United States and Canada competing over a two-day period for more than three million dollars in prizes and scholarships with the chance to win a brand new Pontiac Vibe.
