ROBOTICS LAB WELCOMES BRANDYWINE SEVENTH GRADERS

Mr. Mestishen, BCTC robotics and automation instructor, explains how to control one of the Armdroid robots for Mrs. Barbara Samide, Brandywine Heights Area Middle School Teacher.

After demonstrating the Armdroid, Jon Tirrell, a home-schooled senior, from the Twin Valley School District, watches as seventh-grade students experiment with the robot.

Twenty-four, seventh grade students and their teacher, Ms. Barbara Samide, from Brandywine Heights Area Middle School recently visited the Berks Career and Technology Center to tour the Robotics and Automation Technology Program. The students who are part of Brandywine’s gifted program, decided to come to BCTC because they were learning about robotics and wanted to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge about the topic.

Mr. John Mestishen, robotics and automation technology instructor and his morning class welcomed the class to BCTC and to their program. Jonathan Risser, a senior from Conrad Weiser High School served as the class host and tour guide. Jonathan provided an overview on pneumatics and hydraulics and showed the students different sections of the lab. Students had the opportunity to operate the work cell and the Armdroid robot. Jonathan also fielded a lot of questions from the students who were extremely knowledgeable about robotics and understood the vocabulary.

According to Mr. Mestishen, it was enjoyable and refreshing to see so many young students interested in the field of robotics. "Our door is always open
to any class interested or just curious about this profession, remarked
Mr. Mestishen. "That’s what it’s about. Come in, explore, and learn about the opportunities that are available to our students."
