BCTC STUDENTS EXCEL IN STATE HOSA CONFERENCE

The Pennsylvania chapters of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) recently hosted its 24th Annual State Leadership Conference on
April 9-11, 2003 at the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center in Lancaster. Fifty-two students from the Berks Career and Technology Center attended the event. The conference provided opportunities for personal growth, friendship, and leadership development. This year's theme was "From aspiration to inspiration, HOSA helps around the nation." More than 50 health occupations and leadership events were held in five categories: health occupations related events, health occupations skill events, individual leadership events, team leadership events, and the recognition program. Approximately 700 students from across the state participated in the conference.

Six Dental Occupations students from the East Campus captured the following medals: Shauna L. Correll, Hamburg Area junior, took gold in the dental terminology category, and Brittany S. George, Hamburg Area senior, captured gold in the job-seeking skills competition. Second-place honors were presented to David Florea, Exeter Township senior, dental assisting, Nicole M. Davenport, Boyertown Area senior, extemporaneous speaking, and Sarah T. Hoover, Exeter Township senior, speaking skills. Ashley L. Reifsnyder, Boyertown Area senior, took third place in the field of pharmacology.

Joanne M. Reside, a Hamburg Area junior in the Health Related Technology program at the East Campus, brought home a third-place award in the category of job seeking skills.

First-place honors were presented to three students from the Berks Career and Technology Center's West Campus Health Occupations program. Raelynn Ruch, Governor Mifflin senior, Elizabeth Johnson, Wilson senior, and Megan Paris, Fleetwood Area senior, competed as a team in the medical reading category.

All of the students listed above qualified to compete at the national conference to be held in Atlanta, Georgia on June 16-22, 2003.
