BCTC TO SERVE AS HOST SITE FOR DISTRICT COMPETITIONS

The Berks Career and Technology Center (BCTC) will host the 2004 SkillsUSA District Competition, Monday, February 16, 2004 . Approximately 250 students representing schools in Districts Four and Five will compete in 50 occupational and leadership skills areas at both the East and West campuses throughout the day. The competition will also include adult day students, who will compete on the same skills standards determined by the state organization but on a post-secondary level. The following District Five schools will compete at BCTC: Carlisle , Cumberland-Perry, Dauphin, Franklin , Lebanon , Milton Hershey, Mt. Joy , York , Reading- Muhlenberg, and adult day students. In the event of inclement weather, the snow date is Monday, February 23, 2004 . In fairness to the competition, students from the Berks Career and Technology Center will compete at Reading-Muhlenberg Vo-Tech on Friday, February 13, 2004 , with students from District Four. The scheduled snow date is Monday, February 16, 2004 .

Working against the clock and each other, the participants will prove their expertise in job skills for occupations such as electronics, technical drafting, precision machining, medical assisting, and culinary arts. In addition, there will be competitions in leadership skills, such as extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedures.

The contests are planned by technical committees made up of representatives of labor and management and are designed to test the skills needed for successful entry-level performance in given occupational fields. Nearly 150 members of the Berks business community will serve as judges overseeing the technical skills competition. Safety practices and procedures, an area of great concern to labor and management alike, are judged and graded and constitute a portion of a contestant's score. Winners advance to the state competitions, which will be held April 5-7, 2004 , in Pittsburgh , PA.

SkillsUSA is a national organization serving more than 250,000 high school and college students and professional members who are enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes, and communications skills. SkillsUSA programs also help to establish industry standards for job skill training in the classroom.
