CTC’s Horticulture
program
offers you the opportunity to pursue an interest in four major
areas relative to horticulture, plus small engine repair. Turfgrass
Maintenance involves the study and examination of grasses, soils,
fertilization,
liming, mowing, thatching, aeration, seeding, sodding, spraying,
and the establishment of lawns. Landscape and Landscape Maintenance
includes the principles of landscape design; the study of ornamental
shrubs and trees, perennials, annuals, bulbs, and fruit trees;
and corrective and seasonal pruning. Grounds Maintenance Landscape
Construction includes the installation of walls, walkways, lighting,
fences, wood construction and water features. Greenhouse Crop Production
includes the study of greenhouse structures, soils, fertilization,
watering, pest control and greenhouse crops. Floral Design and
Arranging includes the study of floral shop practices, fresh, silk,
and dried floral arranging, holiday and special occasion designs,
houseplant care, and trends in the floral industry. Small Engine
Repair includes preventative maintenance, tune-up procedures, blade
sharpening and equipment overhaul.
All horticulture areas have a need for strong math skills.
Students in this program
should be proficient in the following: calculating with fraction
operations, computing linear measurements, computing liquid
measurements, computing square feet, computing cubic dimensions,
solving ratio
problems, and using basic geometry.
