Printing is America’s largest manufacturing industry in terms of establishments, with over 44,000 plants in 2004. These plants provide 1.1 million jobs and produce around $157 billion in printed products and services annually. This program introduces students to the printing and publishing industry, safety issues and career opportunities. Students learn the basic principles of lithography and develop skills in electronic imaging/assembly, plate making, and offset press operation. A study of color theory and application will introduce materials and technologies used for four-color reproduction process printing. This course investigates the many materials used in the printing industry. Students will gain experience in printing production and management. Practices such as inventory control, printing layouts, job processing/estimating, and quality control issues will be addressed. Students in this program gain real world experience by doing live production work for outside customers.

The core curriculum covers fundamentals of computerized design technology,
principles of typography, color, project production, basic photography, graphic design, computer to plate operations, press operations, bindery and finishing operations, products of graphic design, electronic illustration, image manipulation, page layout, and project production management. Macintosh Desktop Publishing is made available to all students who desire training in this area of the printing industry.
