HEALTH OCCUPATIONS

Teachers: Maureen Longenecker, East Campus
Karen Holcombe, West Campus

The Health Occupations program is a three-year course intended to develop necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes for safe, competent performance as an entry-level worker in the health care field such as a medical assistant, nurses aide, or health care support worker.  Classroom and laboratory instruction are combined with field trips and clinical experiences to expose the student to a variety of health career choices.  Graduates of this program are prepared to take the state test for nurse aide trainee.

The core curriculum includes an introduction to health care, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, ethical and legal responsibilities, nutrition, normal body functions and common diseases, patient care, human growth and development, rehabilitation, office procedures, medical laboratory procedures, and surgical procedures.

Seniors may secure employment in the cooperative education program, which will enable them to earn money toward tuition for post-secondary training. A high school student must have above average reading, comprehension and math abilities and may elect to attend the Health Occupations program to continue to meet academic requirements for post-high school education.  These academic requirements include Algebra II, Academic Chemistry with a lab, and two years of a foreign language. Instructors and counselors guide each student in identifying the appropriate health career to meet his or her strengths. They learn radiology, anatomy, dental procedures, instruments, sterilization, and other topics in preparation for further schooling.
