The Berks Career and Technology Center’s Service Occupations program
emphasizes vocational and employability skill training as preparation for job placement for students. Research supports that, given work experience during the secondary education years, students are twice as likely to remain employed as adults.
The instruction focuses on maintaining a safe work environment, grounds maintenance, use of kitchen equipment, preparing food items, providing dining room services, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance repair, maintenance cleaning, and participating in a clinical experience.
Students in Service Occupations are exposed to careers within the personal services including food preparation, commercial laundry, cleaning and custodial services. The students benefit from a practical instructional approach that provides opportunities to learn by doing, first in simulation and then in actual work settings. The instructors stress the development and appreciation of efficient work habits, an appreciation for work, the dignity of honest labor, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
