BCTC Students Build Gingerbread Hospital

Sugar and spice isn’t usually what comes to mind when you think of hospitals, but for students at BCTC’s East Campus, they were the main ingredients used in the construction of a gingerbread hospital.

When auxiliary volunteers at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center decided on a gingerbread house theme for this year’s annual holiday fund-raising craft show and bake sale on December 2, the idea quickly arose to construct a gingerbread scale replica of the hospital’s clock tower and main entrance. Auxiliary volunteer Karren Orquiza contacted Culinary Arts instructor Carol Lynn Snow for help with the project. Students in BCTC’s Drafting Design Technology program developed the plan for the replica, and Cabinetmaking students constructed the platform. Culinary Arts students baked the gingerbread and assembled the model. The replica will be displayed in the hospital through the holidays.
