Emily Cumens

Emily ECE Emily Cummens is a senior from Boyertown Area School District who studied Early Childhood Education at the BCTC East campus. Her ultimate career goal is to become an elementary school teacher.

Emily had the opportunity to put her skills to the test through a clinical experience at the BCTC Head Start program. She got to work with young children and guide them through daily routines such as eating, washing their hands, and brushing teeth. In addition, she got to watch kids develop physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively through various activities. Emily also got the chance to shine at another clinical  through Frieden's Child Care. Here, she got to work with infants, school-aged children, and teachers and was able to build a stronger knowledge base.

During her time at BCTC, Emily has received certifications in OSHA, Fire Safety, First Aid/CPR, and CDA Ready. She is also certified as a Mandated Reporter and Assistant Supervisor. In addition, Emily was selected as a "BCTC Student of the Quarter" and received the "Perfect Attendance Award."

Furthermore, Emily is an active member of the FCCLA organization where she served as the 2016-2017 Historian. Being a part of FCCLA has allowed her to participate in several competitions. In 2015, she earned the silver medal at states. Then, in 2016, she received a gold metal which sent her to the national competition. Finally, in 2017, Emily competed at the national level and proudly earned the silver metal.

Outside of school, Emily is a part of her school marching band in the color guard section.

After graduating from high school, Emily plans to further her education at West Chester University to major in Early Grades Education (PK-4). Emily has commented that BCTC has given her many opportunities to succeed and can tell that her teachers care about her. She has also noted that BCTC provides a sense of independence and self-paced learning which has made her time more enjoyable.

When asked to describe her experiences at BCTC, Emily said, "I didn't realize I was making memories, I just knew I was having fun."
