From Script to Screen

On April 27, 2018, Kutztown's department of Cinema, Television and Media held the first annual Student Film Competition. The competition was open to Pennsylvania high school filmmakers as a way to exhibit their creative work on the Kutztown University campus. Two seniors enrolled in the Communication Media program, Justin Freed and Alexander Frantz, entered their video in the contest.

Both Justin and Alex attend Boyertown Area Senior High and wanted to work on a video together for their senior project. After several months of hard work and dedication, the pair had created a final video titled, "The Do's and Dont's of Bowling.

"The purpose of the video was to be instructional and informative while also keeping the audience entertained" Alexander explains.

The idea of the film competition was first mentioned during senior presentations by Cara Cotellese, a professor at Kutztown University. Justin and Alex knew it would be a great opportunity to showcase their talent, and decided to submit their video. On the day of the contest, Justin felt at home and at ease,

"It was just really organized and enjoyable. It had a friendly atmosphere and I felt comfortable no matter what the outcome."

By the end of the night, "The Do's and Don'ts of Bowling" became a crowd favorite and won Best in Show. Justin and Alexander's enthusiasm and skill set had truly paid off. Both boys learned the importance of pre-production and that scripting is crucial to turning a vision into a reality.

Justin Freed proudly holds his new award at the Kutztown film competition.
