Candice Jones, a senior at Boyertown Area Senior High and a Level 3 student in the Early Childhood Education program is making a lasting impression during her co-op at Joseph Hill Daycare. Working in the preschool classroom from 7:00am to 1:00pm each day before heading to her academic classes, Candice is gaining hands-on experience and discovering her passion for teaching.
Her role at the daycare is both dynamic and rewarding. From leading circle time, where preschoolers gather to participate in songs, stories, and group activities, to guiding lessons on the alphabet, colors, and motor skill development, Candice is actively supporting early learning and helping young minds grow. Each week features a new theme, and Candice enthusiastically contributes to planning lessons and leading the classroom’s much-loved daily show and tell.
"I enjoy working with the preschool kids on my co-op," Candice shared, "but it also helped me realize that I would enjoy an elementary classroom setting more."
One of Candice’s favorite parts of the day is lunch with the students. “One of my favorite times during co-op is eating lunch with the kids because we get to sit down and talk about our day,” she said. “It is a good moment to connect with them. I learn a lot about them during this time.”
Candice has also seen incredible growth in her young learners throughout the year. “At the beginning of the year, the students didn’t think they could draw,” she said. “But with time and encouragement, they love teacher-led drawing activities. It is so good to see the confidence they have gained.”
Candice credits her preparation at BCTC for helping her feel confident and capable in the classroom. "Because of my training at BCTC, I knew how to interact with the kids, and how the lesson plans work," she said. "It taught me everything I know about teaching!"
Adjusting to a professional childcare setting wasn’t without its challenges. "When I first started my co-op, my co-workers were all older and more experienced than me. They knew the routines and were familiar with the children—but they were so nice and helped me learn everything I needed to know."
Outside of the childcare center and her high school studies, Candice continues to serve her community. She volunteers each Wednesday afternoon as a tutor for elementary students at her church, bringing her enthusiasm and knowledge to yet another learning environment.
Looking ahead, Candice plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. “I’m hoping to graduate in less than 3 years as I have earned over 30 credits through RACC and Montgomery County Community College,” she explained. “I would like to work as a para-professional in a school during college, as I will be working on my college classes online.”
When asked what advice she would give to students considering BCTC, Candice didn’t hesitate. “It is such a great experience and gives you so many opportunities,” she said.
Candice's co-op experience is a powerful example of how career and technical education can prepare students not only for their first job—but for discovering their future path. With her blend of training, real-world experience, and compassion, Candice is already making a difference in the lives of young learners—and she's just getting started.
