Alexis Hartman, a Drafting Design Technology student and Conrad Weiser senior is gaining hands-on experience through her co-op placement at C2C Design Group—and making a meaningful impact on a local civil engineering project.
Alexis is currently working on survey and waterway reports for a project along Old Lancaster Pike. Her role begins after surveyors collect detailed measurements and property descriptions. From there, Alexis adds critical information about waterways and geology, helping ensure the project meets environmental and construction regulations.
“It’s small stuff, but very important to the project,” Alexis explained. “The staff is very patient and willing to answer any questions I have. They go into a lot of depth, but I understand their explanations from my time at BCTC.”
Her experience has deepened her understanding of civil engineering, especially the complexities of land and waterway management. “I knew you had to understand the land and regulations when building, but I didn’t realize how much you need to know about the waterways—their destination, how to minimize disruptions, and so much more!”
Alexis credits her BCTC training for helping her grasp civil-focused concepts like elevations and says the in-person support at C2C makes a big difference. “Being in person and able to ask questions at C2C makes it easier to understand the project—even if I ask a question five different ways before I fully understand.”
Alexis works Tuesday through Friday from 7:15–10:15 AM and attends BCTC on Monday mornings and Conrad Weiser in the afternoons. Looking ahead, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering, building on the strong foundation she’s developed through her co-op and technical education.
