HW, a senior from Hamburg enrolled in the Service Occupations program at Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC), is gaining valuable hands-on experience through his co-op placement at Hazel’s Café in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. At the café, HW’s responsibilities include making coffee, preparing food items, washing dishes, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for customers.
HW previously worked at Café 412, which was in the same building before it closed and was purchased by a new owner. Recognizing HW’s strong work ethic and reliability, the former owners recommended him for a position at Hazel’s Café, helping him continue his employment in a familiar setting.
Working five days a week, HW says Saturdays are the busiest, providing him with fast-paced, real-world experience in customer service and food service operations. BCTC has played an important role in preparing HW for his co-op, particularly with training in proper cleaning and sanitation procedures essential in the food service industry.
Looking ahead, HW hopes to work at a hardware store or attend a technical school after graduation to train as a mechanic, while continuing to work at Hazel’s Café on the weekend. He already enjoys working on stock cars and often helps his neighbor with their racing vehicle, further fueling his interest in the mechanical field.
HW shared advice for younger students considering co-op opportunities: “Work hard at any job you’re in—you may need them for a future reference.” His experience highlights how BCTC’s co-op program helps students build skills, confidence, and professional connections that support their future career goals.
