Cailyn Smith, a Welding student and Schuylkill Valley junior, is gaining valuable real-world experience through her co-op placement at BoardSafe Docks in Fleetwood—a company known for designing, engineering, and manufacturing commercial and municipal waterfront products, including aluminum-welded floating docks and adaptive kayak launches.
Cailyn’s interest in welding was sparked by her father and several cousins who work in the trade. Her connection to BoardSafe came through a chance meeting involving her father, but she still earned her position by successfully interviewing for the role.
At her co-op, Cailyn carefully follows the blueprint to construct handrails, fencing, and various dock components. Each day brings something new, helping her expand her skills and confidence. “BoardSafe is a great environment,” Cailyn shared.
One of her biggest challenges has been working with aluminum. “I went into the job not being very familiar with welding aluminum, but we would review what went wrong in the process and fix it,” she explained. “I grow so much from constructive criticism—I love it.”
Cailyn’s strong work ethic and positive attitude have made a lasting impression. She plans to continue working with BoardSafe over the summer and into next year. After graduation, she is considering either attending a two-year technical school or continuing her career with the company.
She also offers encouragement to other young women considering a career in the trades: “Don’t be scared, even though it may be a male-dominated field. It’s okay to try new things. You don’t have to be friends with everyone—just get your work done and keep pushing every day.”
Cailyn’s journey is a great example of how determination, hands-on learning, and embracing challenges can lead to meaningful career opportunities.
