As a rising senior from Fleetwood Area High School enrolled in BCTC's Mechatronics Engineering Technology program, Pam Guzman Colon is gaining valuable hands-on experience this summer through her co-op placement at East Penn Manufacturing.
Working alongside experienced Electrical Maintenance Technicians (EMTs) and mechanics, Pam has had the opportunity to shadow professionals as they troubleshoot and repair industrial machinery, electrical panels, and automated equipment. Even better, she's been able to jump in and assist with repairs herself, building the technical skills and confidence needed for a future in engineering.
One of the biggest challenges has simply been learning her way around East Penn's massive facility. From tracking down parts to navigating the plant, Pam admits she's gotten lost more than a few times. But with each day, she becomes more familiar with the operation and continues to grow more comfortable in her role.
Pam's technical abilities extend beyond the workplace. In June 2026, she proudly represented BCTC at the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference, competing in the Electronics contest. The rigorous competition challenged students through a written exam, soldering, troubleshooting, and breadboarding - building and testing temporary electronic circuits using a reusable, solderless plastic base. Competitors demonstrated their knowledge of analog and digital circuitry, diagnosed electronic circuit problems, and tested experimental circuits. Competing on the national stage showcased Pam's dedication, technical expertise, and commitment to excellence.
Looking ahead to her senior year, Pam plans to take college courses through BCTC's Tech Academy at Reading Area Community College while exploring an internship opportunity at East Penn Manufacturing. After graduation, she hopes to attend Penn State University to study electrical engineering, knowing that her co-op experience is giving her a strong foundation for future success.
Pam encourages younger students to take advantage of every opportunity BCTC offers. "Don't be scared to try something new. If you think a program matches what you want to do, just go for it. The experience you gain at BCTC, through clubs, competitions, and co-op, is something you can't get anywhere else."
