This summer, Jesse Gruber, a rising senior in the Electrical Occupations program at BCTC and a student at Boyertown Area Senior High School, is gaining valuable real-world experience through his co-op placement in the Electrical Department at East Penn Manufacturing.
Working alongside experienced electricians, Jesse has been involved in a wide variety of projects that have expanded his skills far beyond the classroom. His daily responsibilities include bending conduit, running electrical circuits, installing network connections for manufacturing equipment, and assisting with electrical maintenance throughout the facility.
One of the most memorable experiences came during a scheduled plant shutdown, when Jesse helped clean numerous electrical switch gears after power was safely shut down. The project gave him a firsthand look at the planning, safety procedures, and teamwork required to maintain a large industrial operation.
Every day brings something new. From operating scissor lifts to working around complex industrial machinery, Jesse is constantly learning new skills and experiencing different aspects of the electrical trade. While some equipment, such as boom lifts, requires additional safety certifications and harness training, he appreciates the opportunity to observe and prepare for the next steps in his career.
For Jesse, however, the best part of the experience is the people. "I really like the people," he said. "They're cool. They're nice." Being surrounded by supportive mentors has made the transition from the classroom to the workplace both enjoyable and rewarding, while giving him confidence as he develops his technical abilities.
Looking ahead, Jesse sees a bright future in the electrical field. "Oh yeah, definitely," he said when asked if he could see himself pursuing this career.
Through BCTC's co-op program, students like Jesse are building the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on experience employers value most. His summer at East Penn Manufacturing is helping him develop the skills needed to power a successful future in the electrical industry.
